Frequently Asked Questions about Hand Therapy

What is hand therapy?
Hand therapy is a specialty within the fields of occupational and physical therapy.  It is defined as the science of rehabilitation of the upper quarter of the body.  In our practice, we provide orthopaedic rehabilitation services for patients with traumatic injury or cumulative trauma disorders.

San Diego hand therapistsWhat should I expect at my first visit?
On your first visit, your therapist will take a thorough history of your injury.  Together, you will develop a treatment plan aimed at returning you back to your daily activities as soon as possible.  You will be expected to follow through with a home exercise program, provided for you at your first visit, and attend all scheduled appointments.  As needed, the therapist will communicate with the doctor, employer, and/or insurance carrier to ensure that you are being provided with the best care.

How long is the appointment?
Typically, appointments run about an hour, but other arrangements can be made if necessary.

Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Yes, most insurances will cover hand therapy services with some variability between specific plans.  You will need a doctor’s referral in order to use your benefits.

What do I need to bring?
You will need your insurance card and may need your doctor’s prescription if we have not received it prior. You can download our intake form from
Mesa Physical Therapy’s Web site. It is also helpful if you bring any splints or other supplies you have been provided since your injury.

What should I wear?
It is helpful if you have comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and possibly a tank top.
